I know I know - here we go again! There are so many movements these days to consider and it can be overwhelming.
What is Reef Safe?
Up to 6,000 tons of sunscreen are estimated to wash into coral reefs around the globe each year.
In a study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other institutions, it was found that baby coral exposed to oxybenzone and octinoxates show signs of distress, including bleaching leaving coral vulnerable to infection. It also prevents the coral from absorbing the nutrients it needs to survive - so it's just dies. Hawaii and Australia have already banned these chemicals for obvious reasons.
Oxybenzone and octinoxate are chemicals found in 65% of all conventional sunscreens. That includes all those coconut smelling creams and sprays meant to be put on your children!! These chemicals allow the skin to absorb the UVA rays and then disperses the radiation... there is no way to tell how long these chemicals stay in your body. That is a huge concern given they are proven hormones disruptors.
Having said that, the EWG (Environmental Working Group) has also rated these chemicals an 8 on the toxicity rating scale , this means it's ONE OF THE MOST TOXIC INGREDIENTS FOUND IN COSMETIC PRODUCTS. So, besides the obviously heavy impact on your health these chemicals have, think about the delicate reef!
