Sun Damage
You might not lay in the sun, but do you sit in a car?
You've probably seen the picture above somewhere on social media. This is the face of a long distance truck driver that was featured on CBSNEWS not too long ago. After 28 years of long haul driving the UVA (Ultraviolet Radiation) damage is all too obvious.
UVA rays transmit through clouds and window glass penetrating the skin's layers, leading to premature aging. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, chronic UVA exposure can result in thickening of the skin's top layers, the epidermis and stratum corneum, as well as destruction of the skin's elastic fibers. *
Experts had thought only ultraviolet B radiation (UVB), which cause sunburn, were the main cause of skin cancer but recent research suggests UVA rays can damage DNA in the skin's deepest layers, increasing risk they become cancerous.
*CBSNEWS.COMWhat to know about Sunscreen.
- Must protect against UVA (UVA rays accelerate aging, cause photo damage and can penetrate glass and cloud cover)
- Must protect against UVB (UVB are the rays that lead to sun damage and skin cancer)
- SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and measures how long your skin will be protected from UVB rays.
- How much do I need to apply?Use the equivalent of 1 - 1.5 shot glasses to cover the whole body with sunscreen.Use 1 teaspoon on each neck and face.
- Not only should you slather sunscreen on the main parts of your face and body but also these easily forgotten areas: the tops of ears, lips, back of the neck and the hands. Men with little to no hair should always be diligent in applying sunscreen to the entire head!
